HISTORY :
The inaugural FIFA World CupTM was extraordinary. The sport's inaugural championship, which was held solely in Montevideo, Uruguay, was full of oddities that might puzzle a modern football fan, like four teams arriving on the same boat, an incomplete stadium, and even a one-armed goal scorer in the Final. However, it concluded with a customary display of delight when Uruguay as a whole observed a public holiday after the Celeste became the first world champions by overcoming Argentina's neighbors 4-2.
The maiden championship had been planned for a while. FIFA stated that it alone had the authority to host an international championship during its 1904 founding convention, but the idea didn't gain traction until the 1920s. Over 40,000 fans watched Uruguay defeat Switzerland in the 1924 Olympic football tournament's final, which was held in Paris. However, it became clear that the moment was right for a new international football competition when the British associations, with their professional leagues, declined to take part in that event following a disagreement over the players' amateur status.
Fun fact, the runners-up medal belonging to Argentina’s Guillermo Stabile, who scored twice in this semi-final en route to becoming top scorer at the 1930 World Cup, is on display at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich.
