HISTORY:

Victory gave England their only world title to date.Hurst remains the one and only player to score a hat-trick in a Final. England was in a similar situation to Brazil in 1950, playing in front of their own fans and their most legendary supporter, Queen Elizabeth II, with a World Cup to be won at Wembley. They were desperate to prevent their own Maracanazo, but they were up against West Germany, who took pleasure in defying the odds, as they demonstrated in 1954 when they defeated Hungary.

Geoff Hurst scored once during the regular 90 minutes and twice more during extra time. The first of those two goals was the most contentious in the history of the World Cup Final: a strong drive that touched the underside of the crossbar and rebounded on the goal-line.
