HISTORY:

Losing finalists at the inaugural FIFA World Cup, Argentina's football team won the championship on home soil 48 years later thanks to Mario Kempes' goals and the zeal of their ardent supporters, whose snowstorms of torn blue and white paper swirling inside the stadiums in Buenos Aires and Rosario provided a memorable scene. Despite Argentina's joy, there was pity for the Netherlands, who finished second for the second consecutive tournament after losing the championship game 3-1 at Estadio Monumental. After Dirk Nanninga's header tied the score following Kempes's first-half goal, the Dutch were inches away from victory when Rob Rensenbrink hit the post in the last seconds of regulation. However, a saved Argentina answered destiny's call, and Kempes and Daniel Bertoni snatched the victory with goals in extra time. Let's not forget that this world cup was held during a dictatoship but more on this is on my website if you like to chck it out (in spanish).

STATS: Tops Scores: Mario Kempes in the lead with 6 goals (Argentina),followed by Rob Rensenbrink and Teofilo Cubillas with 5. Out of 38 games, 102 goals were scored with an avereage of 2.7 per match.
