HISTORY:

Germany wins the award despite praise from the Dutch.

Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer, who shone in the spotlight left vacant by Pele, led their respective Dutch and West German teams through to a Final confrontation in Munich on July 7, 1974, in this competition known as Total Football. In contrast to Ferenc Puskas' Magnificent Magyars 20 years prior, West Germany prevailed, coming from behind to defeat the favorites and win their second world championship.
