HISTORY:
Hosts When the second season of the fledgling tournament began in 1934, Italy became the first European champion.
With eight host cities as opposed to one, and live radio broadcasts bringing the action to listeners in 12 of the competing countries, it was a competition on a larger scale than four years prior. However, much like in Uruguay, it was the host team that emerged victorious. Goals from Raimondo Orsi and Angelo Schiavio helped Vittorio Pozzo's Italy defeat Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the Final in Rome.
Following the inaugural FIFA World Cup's triumph, a 32-team preliminary round was held to select the 16 winners. In the one and only case of its type, Italy had to defeat Greece in order to go to their own tournament. By traveling to the finals but not taking part in a single match, Mexico offered yet another anomaly. Although they had initially defeated Cuba to secure a spot, the unfortunate Mexicans were forced to compete against another qualifier when they arrived in Rome, where they lost 4-2.
The most noticeable absence from the field of competitors was Uruguay, who had declined to take part in retribution for Italy's failure to come in 1930, leaving them as the only previous winners who had not successfully defended their title. The South American nations who did make the lengthy trip were soon on their way back home after Argentina and Brazil, both of which fielded under-strength squads, were defeated by Sweden and Spain in the opening round, respectively.
