HISTORY
A competition that set all records
United States wins third Golden Ball in Women's World Cup. A amazing final hat-trick from Carli Lloyd
At Canada 2015's seventh Women's World Cup, records were set.
The seventh FIFA Women's World CupTM got off to a record-breaking start with 24 teams taking the field for the first time ever in the history of the game, and it ended with USA being the first country to win the trophy three times. In addition, Canada 2015 produced an all-time high of 112 goals, one more than the previous record, which was established by Germany in 2011.
As befitting a tournament finale, the Stars and Stripes thrashed the reigning champions Japan 5-2.
By the time the Americans jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with three of those goals coming from the talismanic Carli Lloyd, the game was essentially gone.
It was fitting that the 32-year-old midfielder became the hero of the USA. The Nadeshiko celebrated their first global championship when Lloyd missed a penalty in the shootout that determined the Germany 2011 Final between the same two teams. She was on duty that terrible night in Frankfurt with the other 13 members of the USA squad, and they have finally successfully avenged their loss.
