HISTORY
USA victory as China PR creates history
1991 saw the USA win the first Women's World Cup.
Michelle Akers receives the Golden Boot, and Carin Jennings wins the Golden Ball.
The FIFA Women's World Cup, which was first held in November 1991, saw the appointment of six female referees or assistant referees for the first time in FIFA history.
To sizable and enthusiastic spectators, China PR's maiden tournament began. It turned out to be a huge success with 12 competing nations.
Six female referees or assistant referees were recruited among match officials for the first time in FIFA history, in keeping with the genuine spirit of the celebration. The third-place match's referee, Brazilian Claudia de Vasconcelos, made history as the first woman to officiate at this level for FIFA.
The American team, led by a dominant front line that the Chinese media dubbed "the Triple Edged Sword," dominated the competition and won the first-ever women's football world championship.
20 of the 25 goals for the Stars and Stripes were scored by Michelle Akers, Carin Jennings, and April Heinrichs collectively, including all five (Jennings 3, Heinrichs 2) in a 5-2 semi-final victory against Germany and both goals (Akers) in a 2-0 triumph. over Norway to win the title.
