France identity crisis
Throughout this past decades, France’s identity crisis went up and so was discrimination.
Inmigration takes a huge part into consideration. For starters the so called “immigrants” are represented in the nonewhite population which makes it increase the degree of racism and turns them into the visible minorities. The way i see it, it is completely insane to categorize someone with “less value” just for the fact that they have different skin color and different ethnic backgrounds , especially in the 21st century.
An example of people trying to change the pace sourrounding the issue, the french Constitution removed the word “race” in its vocabulary as a result of bringing people together, not to divide them. just as the world cup wins -dated both in 98’ and 2018' respectivly-.
Historically wise, we go back to the days of the Vichy’s régime during World War II, for just a second, when race became dangerously divise, in fact, this is when the subcategories started to take part in the french society. For instance, players like Kraim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe and Zinedine Zidane were bullied by the media and the public eye. They represent the visible minorities I was previously discussing, even though, nowadays they are considered heroes.
The obsession with national identity and divisions denies distinctions of race and ethnicity. Including being illegal to make a census surrounding the topic being discussed. the question remains, how can we analyse the french if we don't actually have statistics?
This world cup victory does not celebrate inclusivity of any kind, in fact it is quite the opposite. By calling it an “ïnmigrant win”, we are restricting the belonging of France and making these visible minorities even bigger.
Needless to say, even if football normally unites people, this was not entirely the case. Does it bring more cultural diversity? Indeed, but do people understand this as a good thing? Unfortunately no. these past few months, the french national team has faced a new epitete, being labeled as the “low life from the ghetto squad”. why is that? in particular because more than half of the players are nonewhite as well as have africans descendents in their family tree, that is another reason why they been called “the last african team standing” -as if that were a bad thing-. yeah, xenophobia and racism keeps on rising high even in 2019, extremely painful to my concerne.
Half of the people that were rooting against france (pro Croatia) during the final, were indeed, in favor of continuing a legacy of discrimination in all of it complex forms.
