The Independent Pitch: Self-Funding & Sartorial Autonomy

Who said you needed permission?

There is a particular kind of freedom that arrives when you realize you can fund your own curiosity.

No editor has to approve the trip, nor your take.No institution has to validate the story. No one has to decide that your obsession is “worth covering.” If you can make it happen, you can go. And suddenly, the pitch changes. It is no longer: “Would you like me to cover this?” It becomes: “I am going to cover this.”

Self-funding isn't glamorous. It is spreadsheets, exchange rates, flights purchased with a suspicious amount of optimism, accommodation research at midnight, and the occasional realization that your journalism budget and your shoe budget are fighting for the same money, and honey, i’m a woman with very expensive taste, i mean i go all in in every single aspect of my life, that’s why i went to a 5 star hotel everywhere i went, dine at SATC & Gossip Girl film locations and invested in what i love the most, me, myself and I.

But there is something intoxicating about paying your own way. Because the story remains yours, you keep your own byline.

There is also something delicious about choosing how you arrive. What you wear. Where you stand. Who you speak to. What you notice, what you choose not to do, think or do.What you refuse to overlook.

Your clothes become part of your reporting language and mine match the setting i’m in (btw you’ll see that coming up in my mag). Not a costume. Not camouflage. A declaration, what you wear is the intention that you set yourself for the world to see, what you feel and what you connect with, it show the world who you are and who you like to be.

THE REAL LUXURY

The luxury isn't the hotel. It isn't the front-row seat, it isn't even the plane ticket. The luxury is editorial independence. To follow the question that won't leave you alone, to ask what drives you. To investigate the corner everyone else walked past, to write about the thing that makes your brain light up. Personally, i went to every single reference i loved in every single place i went to, jazz bars? movie/tv locations? Stadiums? Runways? Music locations? You got it. I choose to spend my energy on what i love, not what i don’t care for.

I never write about what’s trendy, even if it’s the way you monetize your content, I stopped asking whether a story was important enough for someone else, i only live by my own rules. That distinction changes everything, because sometimes the most interesting story isn't the one everyone is talking about, it's the one you can't stop thinking about, that obsession that drives you.

If you are waiting for someone to give you permission to begin,clearly i’m not,  consider this your permission slip. Fund the trip if you can. Build the story yourself. Dress for the life you're building make it fucking yours, not eveyone else’s. And remember: You don't need to be chosen to become the person who chooses.

I used to think independence meant doing everything alone, and it its, I mean, I styled and sewed my own looks, I self funded my trips, I was my own photographer, editress and security guard. The risks were mine.

There is a particular romance in financing your own curiosity. You become your own editor, correspondent, producer, accountant, stylist and occasional crisis-management department. Is it exhausting? Obviously. Would I do it again? Also obviously. Because there is nothing quite like realizing that the life you imagined does not require an invitation. Like Samantha Jones would say, i love you, but i love me more, so the last thing you need is someone by yourself when you can be your own company. I’m not saying that you shouldn't enjoy life with other, lucky i have a lot of friends that are also kinda like my soulmates, cus they’re the people i choose to love, however there’s nothing quite like yourself. Sometimes you just have to buy the ticket and take over the world by yourself.
