Volleyball-Argentina beat Brazil in tense full sets to win bronze #TOKYO2020
Argentina won the bronze medal in men's volleyball at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, defeating 2016 gold medalists Brazil in a dramatic full-set match, sending the world's top-ranked team home without an Olympic medal for the first time since 2000.
Argentina, rated sixth in the world, had lost to their South American rivals in a full-set preliminary match, but they beat Brazil in the bronze final 25-23 20-25 20-25 25-17 15-13.
Facundo Conte, the team's outside hitter, led the way with 21 points, while four other teammates, including Agustin Loser and Bruno Lima, also scored in double figures.
Argentina, who had reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2000, regained their composure after a dismal straight-set loss to France on Thursday, with regular attacks and forceful blocks. Argentina also took bronze in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
The Argentine volleyball team crowned a historic performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with a bronze medal. After the national triumph against Brazil in the match for third place, and in the midst of a festive atmosphere, Sebastián Solé left a message with a request as important as the celebration.
"Volleyball is about to disappear in Argentina," said the 30-year-old center-back who works for Perugia in Italy, giving voice to a request for help for a discipline hit hard by the pandemic in the country: in the last league Bolívar gave up participating and the number of teams was the lowest in its history.
