HISTORY:

The third FIFA World CupTM was held against a gloomy backdrop of war clouds gathering over Europe, but football, especially the flamboyantly skillful brand played by Brazil, provided a ray of sunshine for the French crowds over the course of the 15-day festival, with Italy emerging as deserving champions.

Four members of Italy's 1934 winning team remained on the team, including coach Vittorio Pozzo. Giuseppe Meazza and Giovanni Ferrari were two of them, and star striker Silvio Piola was another. Piola scored twice in the 4-2 Final victory over Hungary, making the Azzurri the first team to successfully defend the trophy.
