GG ORIGINAL VS REVIVAL: PILOT VS JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE MTA
Hey Upper East Siders, Legally Polymath here, and I got the biggest review ever! A comparison between the original GG and the new one! The reboot of the series promises to present a distinction to the first adaptation of six seasons, but it does not separate itself from the most representative moments that accompanied the classic 'XOXO' of who was behind the screen, and here are the tributes that the series of HBO Max surrenders to the original version:
THE KICKOFF AT GRAND CENTRAL STATION
Tributes were everywhere on the first episode of this new teen drama. Starting off with the iconic entrance of Serena van Der Wooodsen's iconic re-entry to the Big Apple, to Kate Keller's opening scene with an exact replica of the it girl's outfit. Casual, easy, breazy, beautiful. Overall, very Seren with a 2021 twist. Even though this is a new character with a brand new attitude, and mission, since we know that this professor is indeed, Gossip Girl 2.0. The look from 14 years ago continues to shine, a striped base garment, a camel blazer and a mustard-toned scarf tied at the neck infused a basic and neutral look, but very flattering.
THE STEPS OF THE MET
How can we forget the emblematic hot spot of the city. Socialista? No, the steps of the met. The classic place where the Upper East Siders, or in this case, New York's elite from Contance Billard and St Judes gather the power and hierarchy of the island. It used to be reserved for those who reside in Manhattan but now Brooklyn is included in the crown.
THE NAME DROPPING
Nate Archibald, Chuck Bass, Blair Waldorf, Serena van Der Woodsen and Dan Humphrey were mentioned in the first few minutes of the revival. The golden boy gathered all the protagonism due to his loyalty and good grace, with a solid good reputation.
THE FASHION
Unquestionably THE most important factor of the show are the awe-inspiring clothes. This time around, the looks are more modern, not entirely sticking to the classic Ivy League style like we see in the original but each and every character has similarities with members of the first show. The reboot’s fashion has some similarities to the original, namely the characters’ private school uniforms that have long been a hallmark of the series. With the contemporary set of characters, we receive new storylines, personalities, and of course glamorous event looks and stylized uniforms from Manhattan's new elite. With the personal style of dress functions as the perceptual cue of oneself and by extension as well as identity formation. the beginning of a storyline is captured within each outfit.Uniquely the reboot, dressed by original costume designer Eric Damon, references specific influences and and codes of dress to create the image of very formidable characters with much depth. The fashion in the first episode establishes the tone, pace, and acts as the foundation for character introduction and by extension development. this idea of self-expression and branding through fashion is wat GG is all about. the influence of fashion within social media to not only go with the storylines. It is to present identity not only externally to signify visually but to showcase internal impact on these characters in hand with their inner lives as each one uses fashion in a very specific way.
MONET DE HAAN, the character who most embodies the enuances of the original Gossip Girl era. The ultimate mean girl with a magnetic quality to her demands. Hailing from old New York Money, Monet has the most regal, polished, preppy, and daring style, the color palette that has been seen on her is very neutral, with black, grey and white. skirts, maryjane shoes and shirts. she is known for sporting a veronica beard Cooke Dickey Tweed Blazer with the Mirabelle Tweed Skirt, Balmain Button-Trimmed Ribbed Crop Top, Sam Edelman Aretha Platform Loafer Pumps, and finished off the look with a Ferragamo Studio Bag Medium. Hewr other looks consist of Chanel, Gucci and Valentino. The balmain lilac suit commands visually the power she holds
Audrey has the most stylish, preppy yet sophisticated garments. Her biggest aspirations are Audrey Hepburn and Jane Austen novels, just like Blair but with blonde locks, also, her relationship with longtime Aki resembles a lot like Blair & Nate back in season 1. Chanel and old Hollywood glamour describes her the best. She is described as possessing a certain type of grace and competence, with self-assurance. Her first look consists of an oversized Michael Kors tartan mohair-blend sweater, over the Constance's base uniform paired with Chloe Emma leather-trimmed suede pumps over black ankle socks, and paired off with a small Cartier bag while reading Essays on Women's Lives. The look captures her soft and girlish, yet poised, undone, and chic aesthetic. Many of her vintage pieces pay tribute to elegant fashion, but with a subtle edge in juxtaposition with a quiet softness.
Luna La, the stylish of the group, one of Julien's minions. She has a very ethereal and feminine style with boho-chic leniances. Super youthful with boho vibes. Her style thrives in the details like ruffles and frills, rather than abundant looks she goes for understated and fresh ones, much like her personality. She does not strive to be the center of attention, but uses her styling skills to uplift others.
Julien, daughter of a music producer, on the other hand, is more trendy, she’s an influencer dating an activist who resides in Dumbo. Calloway is the IT Girl and the queen bee of Constance fighting for the spot on the throne and the love of her ex next to her half sister Zoya. Noted for her influence, is a rising model, she closed the Christopher John Roger’s show. She is the top trendsetter with athleisure, menswear, glamor, and high fashion influences. Her style is similar to how Serena in the original had taken style cues from models such as Kate Moss. Super eclectic and model streetwear. Her first in the show is made up of a Maje Paris Cimpo Oversized Striped Shirt in Ivory, Schutz Abbey Boots in Almond Buff, and Fendi Red Corduroy Baguette. Her tie is embellished with a Cartier Juste Un Clou 18ct pink-gold tie pin. Her fashion influences the rest.
Zoya Lott, the newcomer. Zoya believes clothing has a voice through her revolution book tote. She tends to emotionally connect with the pieces she wears as we can see through her wearing her mother’s scarf on the first day of school. Zoya goes for vintage pieces, casual garments and a very relaxed look. As an activity you can spot badges and pins from different associations.
Max Wolfe, overall, the most stylish man of the new show. Drama and sexual liberation follows him everywhere, and he shows it through his sexy looks. He doesn't play by the rules, just like Chuck Bass, and wears daring garments on his three piece suits.
Aki Menzies, on the other hand, is a skater, with a super relaxed vibe. His pastel pink hair is edgy with a twist. Overall, very Nate Archibald, matching his personality. Sweet and polite. Obie Bergmann IV is the closest to Dan Humphrey in terms of style, a proud Dumbo resident who thinks there’s more than the Upper East Side. His style is not very together and quite plain and boring.

THE STORYLINE
The original series pilot begins with a panoramic shot of New York City and Serena getting of a train from Grand Central. Similar to the first few seconds of the reboot where Kate Keller, a teacher and Gossip Girl 2.0, starts the new chapter of evil and social torture.
The presentation of the Humphreys and the status of Serena is extremely familiar to Juliens. Kate is watching an IG story of hers while contemplating her terror. The bass annual brunch vs an insight on Juliens home with a glimpse of Blair's room. We learn a lot from their families at first sight. The revival showcases the post pandemic wonderfully on the first day of school. Plus we know who Gossip Girl is from the beginning. In this case, the teachers, with a new purpose, avoid suffering the students, they are threatened by them, which is kind of creepy. This time around, the acting is really cringey and honestly, bad at points. But the whole half sistery bond/rivals is kinda cool, much like a Blair& Serena phenomenon.
Even though i think that teachers should never, under ANY circumstances abuse of their power because they lack of, way less through gossip and half naked pictures of their students, that's a felony.
Headbands and martinis were also included in the storyline of the first episode. But now, they are not as cool as they used to. Same thing goes to the hierchy between juniors and freshmens.
XOXO GOSSIP GIRL
