CULTURAL IMPACT
Barbra Streisand rose to fame as one of the most creatively and commercially successful performers of her generation, thanks to her highly resonant and sophisticated vocal prowess, charismatic personality, and fierce independence. Streisand's rise as a singer was notable not only because she rose in the face of a dominant musical trend — rock & roll — that she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal abilities as a stepping stone to other careers, including stage and film actresses and film directors. Her Broadway debut in the 1962 musical comedy I Can Get It for You Wholesale earned her a Tony nomination and the New York Drama Critic's Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She won two Grammys for her debut album The Barbra Streisand Album in 1963, a best actress Oscar for her film debut in 1968's Funny Girl, and a Grammy and an Oscar for her work in 1976's A Star Is Born. Her film work has had a similar cultural impact, with classics such as the aforementioned Funny Girl, 1972's What's Up, Doc?, and 1973's The Way We Were starring Robert Redford. She is also the first woman to win best director at the Golden Globes for her work on the 1984 film Yentl, in which she also starred and provided the soundtrack. Despite this, her singing career remains dominant, with 11 number one albums, the most for any woman, including People in 1964.
