CULTURAL IMPACT
Erasure, founded in London in 1985, combines the talents of emotive, broad-ranging vocalist Andy Bell and synth idol Vince Clarke, a founding member of Depeche Mode and Yazoo. Erasure, like those bands, is a synth-based band with stronger, more house-oriented dance inclinations, as well as a sharp, approachable sense of pop songcraft. After making their debut with Wonderland in 1986, the pair's third album, The Innocents, proved to be their breakthrough in the United States, with the Top 20 singles "Chains of Love" and "A Little Respect." They returned to the Top 20 with the international hit "Always" in 1994, and they remained a regular Billboard 200 act with occasional singles landing on the club charts.
