CULTURAL IMPACT
INXS came from Australia's pubs, which is why the band never felt at home in the new wave scene. Even when they ventured into synth pop on early recordings, they were anchored by a hard, Stonesy beat and lead singer Michael Hutchence's Jagger-esque strut. Finally, it was these factors that catapulted INXS to international stardom in the late 1980s. By that point, the band had distilled their hard rock, dance, and new wave influences into a sleek, stylish groove that helped propel their 1987 album Kick to multi-million-selling status. While that sound propelled them to fame, it also proved to be their undoing; INXS were boxed in by their Stonesy pop-funk style in the early 1990s, when audiences were drawn to harder-edged alternative rock. The band continued to tour and record for a devoted fan base until Hutchence's untimely death in 1997 effectively ended the band's heyday.
