One of the largest pop bands of their generation, Maroon 5—and particularly its lead singer Adam Levine—became the face of blue-eyed soul in the twenty-first century by navigating changing musical and fashion trends. The group took a circuitous route to success, changing from the straightforward 1990s rock group Kara's Flowers to the slick, soulful Maroon 5 with the release of Songs About Jane in 2002. However, the album languished for two years before "This Love" rose to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004. The group remained a constant at the top of the charts after that.

CULTURAL IMPACT

The bandmates reassembled as Maroon 5 after briefly attending college, bringing in former Square guitarist James Valentine to the lineup, and adopting a more R&B-influenced style. After some time, the quintet's songs It Won't Be Soon Before Long and Songs About Jane, both of which achieved multi-platinum status, brought them to the forefront of the pop music scene.
