CULTURAL IMPACT

Materials inspired by the early Jackson 5 of the New Edition made them a pioneer of two generations of teen pop. As they matured and progressed, they laid the foundation for the fusion of hip-hop and R & B known as New Jack Swing. In fact, after the new edition fell apart, all its members had at least some significant success outside the group as part of the New Jack movement. The name was born. New Edition was formed by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Bobby Brown in the Roxbury area of Boston, Massachusetts. Bobby Brown started singing with him in 1978, hoping to play with pocket money when he was in elementary school. They eventually hired a friend, Ralph Tresbant, as their fourth member, and after winning the talent show in 1980, they also added Ronnie Devo. More talent show victories continued, including a prestigious performance at the local Strand Theater that staged The Love You Save for The Jackson 5. They were discovered by the writer / producer / Impresario Maurice Starr who signed the group on his little streetwise label in the hope of causing the Jackson 5 phenomenon in the 80's. The song "Candy Girl" written by Starr for the group was released as the first single in 1983 when the members were 13 to 15 years old. Despite the lack of interest of the major labels in the group, "Candy Girl" was a smash and surpassed the R & B charts. Their debut album "Candy Girl" produced two more R & B hits, "Popcorn Love" and "Is This the End?", And MCA offered the group a deal. However, the star wanted the quintet to stay streetwise. The new edition immediately dismissed him as their manager and signed the MCA. Stars tried to sue the group in their name, but failed, claiming that the "new edition" actually refers to a whole new style of pop music he created. The star became rich with a similar concept and put together a teenage quintet dubbed New Kids on the Block.
