Phil Collins' success as a pop and adult contemporary singer in the 1980s and beyond was likely as surprising to him as it was to many others. The Genesis drummer-turned-vocalist was nearly 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native United Kingdom (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.). Collins had 13 consecutive Top Ten hits in the United States between 1984 and 1990.
