Must Haves. Music Edition. Red Hot Chili Peppers.
BACKGROUND HISTORY
The roots of the band are in the friendships made by three school friends, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak, who attended Fairfax High School in California in the late 70's and early 80's. Balzary and Slowak showed great musical potential (with trumpet and guitar, respectively), while Kiedis focused on poetry and drama during his school days. During this time, Srowak taught Balzary to play bass, and the duo encouraged Keydis to begin setting his poems in music. Strongly influenced by LA's fast-growing punk scene (The Germs, Black Flag, Fear, Minutemen, X, etc.) and funk (ParliamentFunkadelic, Sly & Family Stone, etc.), the trio began rehearsing with another friend. Drummer Jack Irons led to the formation of the Miraculous Majestic Masters of Mayhem with Tony Flow, a quartet who played strip bars on the sunset strip in the early 80's. During this time, the four honed their sound and live act (playing completely nude on stage, except for tube socks that cover certain parts of the anatomy, so they quickly encountered the trademark stage gimmick. In 1983, Balzary began its activities under the name "Flea" and the group changed its name to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

CULTURAL IMPACT
Few of the 80's rock groups broke many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Chili Peppers fused funk and punk rock (launching an explosive stage show) to create a new style of music and then a number of impersonators, but still packs at the beginning of the 21st century.
