Must Haves. Music Edition. Spice Girls.
BACKGROUND HISTORY.
The Spice Girls are a British girl band that was founded in 1994. The group came together as a result of tryouts organized by managers Bob and Chris Herbert, who sought to build a girl group to compete with the popular British boy bands of the period. They joined with Virgin Records and released their debut single "Wannabe" in 1996, which went to #1 in 37 countries. Spice (1996), their debut album, sold more over 23 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling female group album in history. Spiceworld (1997), the sequel, has sold over 14 million copies worldwide. Both albums encapsulated the group's dance-pop style and theme of female empowerment, with the members contributing equally to vocal and songwriting contributions. Spice Girls, a film starring the Spice Girls, was released in 1997.
Halliwell departed the Spice Girls in May 1998, citing weariness and artistic disagreements as reasons. The only Spice Girls album without Halliwell, Forever (2000), had lower sales. The Spice Girls went on pause at the end of 2000 to focus on their solo careers. Return of the Spice Girls (2007–2008) and Spice World (2019), both of which won the Billboard Live Music Award for highest-grossing engagements, reunited them for two concert tours. Viva Forever!, a musical based on the Spice Girls' music, premiered in 2012 and closed in 2013. It was a critical and commercial failure.
