Style analysis: Gossip girl (Jenny Humphrey)

Before analyzing someone's style, it's important to understand the characters arc.

Jenny, unlike Serena and Blair, is not the typical park avenue princess. Captivated by the world of the magnificent Upper East Side, she lives in Brooklyn. Strives for the approval of Blair Waldorf and her clan.

Though as the show progresses, Humphrey becomes a force of nature that rebels against the rules of this unattainable world. An aspiring fashion designer who later on becomes entangled in various scandals created on purpose by herself. Leading drama everytime she possibly can.

Through the seasons, Taylor Momsen's style progresses into a rock emo girl, super stylish but far from the jenny wearing pastel colors and white we watched on season one. This is where fashion psychology enters the conversation. Everything we do and think is reflected by our clothes. It is our reflection to the world, how we are perceived and portrayed to others. Part of her identity formation and costume design is developed in her actions. The more innocent her actions are, the more pastels colors she wears, the wilder the actions, the darkest the garments. She ultimately finds herself but constantly struggles with role confusion, not knowing what to do and learning lessons the hard way.

Her girlish looks resemble her youth self, before she was attached to the craziness surrounding the Upper East Side, a people pleaser who idolizes Blair. She makes her own preppy clothes, soft colors with blazers and headbands. Pastels are traditionally femmenine and romantic in a similar value to the influence of the people around her. You can say that she is a mix between serena and blair.

Scheming runs in her blood eventually when she shows her true colors, another reflection of her style choices. After being rejected at Constance and a rebellious phase in Waldorf designs, her real life style appears on the show with black vintage plaid skirts very Courtney Love 90s inspired.

The styling is a key element to her storyline, allowing her inner punk rock princess to stand out. Her alternative fashion evolved into a social scope, rejecting the world she once wanted to be a part of and switching her life goals, from queen B to fashionista. Leading her own path. More glam rock references are being made. Due to her new perception she's being treated differently from others, no longer being the naive girl she once was. Again, she changes her wardrobe by changing her life. Creating a line very Elie Saab to something extremely Margiela.

Being back at Constance as her new queen status, she tries to change monarchy for a little while but never quite does it. Headbands are gone for good and sheer accessories, layering and black corset tops are the new trend among the traditional Constance's girls.

Understanding that class and hierarchy is strictly directed into fashion and power. As queen everyone wears what she owns, instead, as an outsider, she was bullied for being herself not allowing the rest to be themselves.

Fishnets, menswear and excessive jewelry are a new staple on a very neutral/dark color pattern. She uses clothing as a power tool of wealth creating a social distance from those around her who worship her as queen.

After being vanished from Manhattan, her style is completely established and sets her ground reaching identity achievement commiting to herself with her own distinct self. She is clearly the perfect example of the use of clothing as a coping mechanism.
