Fashion Icons Encyclopedia. Oscar De La Renta.
Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic, yet he was a multi-national figure. He went to Spain to study Fine Arts when he was very young and met Cristóbal Balenciaga, with whom he took his first steps into the world of fashion. He then traveled to Paris to further his personal and professional development.
Soon after, he was called upon to make his creative directorial debut for Elizabeth Arden, and he had to go to New York. Both the Spanish and the French, as well as the North Americans, did not fail to lavish him with all the accolades that could and would be bestowed upon him. He decided to build his own brand using his name in the United States, and it quickly became one of the most popular.
In the United States, he chose to launch his own brand under his own name, and he quickly established himself as one of the most well-known designers on both sides of the Atlantic. So much so that Oscar de la Renta has become a true industry symbol.
The Dominican's designs for his own company were feminine, stylised, and cut in a classic style. Its clothes were designed for upper-middle-class women in their twenties who were looking for a loyal friend in the brand's slightly draped and glossy designs to stylize their figures. Over time, the emporium expanded to include a wide range of things, from jewelry to furniture to perfumes, all of which were linked with elegance and excellent taste.
