Fashion Icons Encyclopedia. Tommy Hilfiger.

The Big Apple of New York, no more and no less, has been and continues to be the setting in which Tommy Hilfiger has established his made in USA aesthetic, expanded his brand to all regions and goods, and achieved success.

Thomas Jacob Hilfiger (Elmira, 1951) could hardly have imagined that his intention of bringing neoyorquino street style to his little town by opening a store would lead him to possess an authentic textile empire.

Mohan Murjani, an Indian entrepreneur, approached Hilfiger in 1984, searching for a designer to lead a men's sportswear business. Murjani sealed the deal by allowing Hilfiger to design the label under his own name. Hilfiger's debut on the scene was heralded with a blitz marketing effort that included a dramatic billboard in Times Square in New York City heralding Hilfiger as the next big thing in American fashion.

Tommy Hilfiger, a fashion designer, has developed a brand around his characteristic red, white, and blue tag, which has proven famous among both the high and lower classes. In the 1970s, he opened multiple stores before creating his wildly successful product. It wasn't until 1984 that he was contacted to create a men's sportswear line that he finally got his chance with his name that he took off into the stratosphere of fame and fashion.
