MET GALA 2023. Karl Lagerfeld. A line of Beauty

The Met Gala has commanded its most famous guests over the years to dress in some very outrageous themes. Are you familiar with  "Punk: Chaos to Couture" from 2013 or "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" from 2016? The subject for 2023 is somewhat simpler: "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." Yes, the 2019 Met Gala's costume theme revolves around the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, rather than a "what" or "whatnot." Here is all the information you need to know about the Met Gala's subject, including the accompanying exhibition and the anticipated tributes from celebrities, this year’s celebrity cochairs are Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and of course Anna Wintour.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will once again present an accompanying exhibition for the occasion, which is planned to be a celebration of Karl's life and career. From May 5 to July 16, 2023, the exhibition "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" will be on display. It will focus on "the designer's stylistic vocabulary as it was expressed in through lines—aesthetic themes that appear time and time again—in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019." Additionally, it is said that the exhibition will feature over 150 pieces, many of which will be accompanied by Karl's sketches.

With a heady forward momentum supporting him, Lagerfeld maintained an immense workload over the years. He created more than a dozen collections each year for three visually unique houses: Chanel, Fendi, Chloe, and his own label. In addition, he frequently directed, photographed, and filmed editorials for top magazines as well as advertising campaigns for the houses. He was, to put it mildly, controversial. His morals were abhorrent, but his artistic vision was impeccable.

Some of the highlighted looks of the night included male model Alton Mason who was the first black male model to have walked for Chanel, top model Anok Yai, co-chairs Dua Lipa, Penolope Cruz and Michaela .Oscar winner Anne Hathaway channeled old Hollywood glamour from the neck up, on top of Lagerfeld's signature '90s style from the body down, a love story between Versace and Chanel. Grammy award winning musician Doja Cat wowed spectators as she paid tribute to Lagerfeld's beloved pet Choupette, even using prosthetics to fully transform her face. Proving the mullet is truly here to stay, Stewart puts a modern twist on the classic Chanel suit.
